==Confidence==
In verses 6-7 we see that even in the light of great uncertainty Paul called on Timothy to place his confidence in God.  It is God who is accomplishing his plan in us.


==Courage==

* Μὴ οὖν ἐπαισχυνθῇς τὸ μαρτύριον τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν, μηδὲ ἐμὲ τὸν δέσμιον αὐτοῦ· ἀλλὰ συγκακοπάθησον τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ κατὰ δύναμιν θεοῦ, τοῦ σώσαντος ἡμᾶς καὶ καλέσαντος κλήσει ἁγίᾳ, οὐ κατὰ τὰ ἔργα ἡμῶν, ἀλλὰ κατ᾽ ἰδίαν πρόθεσιν καὶ χάριν τὴν δοθεῖσαν ἡμῖν ἐν χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ πρὸ χρόνων αἰωνίων, φανερωθεῖσαν δὲ νῦν διὰ τῆς ἐπιφανείας τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ, καταργήσαντος μὲν τὸν θάνατον, φωτίσαντος δὲ ζωὴν καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν διὰ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου, εἰς ὃ ἐτέθην ἐγὼ κῆρυξ καὶ ἀπόστολος καὶ διδάσκαλος ἐθνῶν. *Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.

Paul calls on Timothy to stay with Christ, even if it involves suffering and discomfort.  First Peter 3:14 says that we are blessed in trials.  
====Suffering is normal/expected for the follower of Christ====
In Chapter 4 of First Peter we see that we should not think it strange to endure suffering.

We must be ready to suffer.  We must be prepared to suffer persecution for Christ.

God gives us a high position when he calls us his servants and when he calls us his ambassadors.  God has given us a high position for his glory and we must not abdicate our duties but rather we must make God’s call our priority.  Not being ashamed of the Lord means investing ones life in service to the Lord.  In 2 Corinthians 12 Paul addressed the thorn in the flesh.  Three times Paul had asked for removal, but God responded No! My grace is sufficient for you, my strength is made perfect in weakness.  We are without excuse, as servants of God we must serve with our all.  

===A Hope-Filled Persuasion (verse 12)===

The focus of this verse is on the eternal security of the soul.  The emphasis is on God’s keeping power.

====The Basis of His Belief====
Paul’s basis for faith was Jesus Christ.
====The Security of His Belief====
Paul was secure because of the relationship he enjoyed with Christ.  His should was secure in Christ.
