In the 1990s, the Dallas Cowboys were the gold standard of football. With stars like Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin, they dominated the league — winning three Super Bowls and looking nearly unstoppable. Everything about them signaled a dynasty. They had talent, experience, and confidence. From the outside, it looked like nothing could bring them down.

But over time, cracks began to form beneath the surface. Tensions grew, egos clashed, and off-the-field distractions crept in. The unity that once defined them slowly eroded — and as that unity faded, so did their dominance. The same team that once played with one heart and one purpose began to unravel — not because they suddenly lost talent, but because they lost cohesion.

What’s striking is this: they didn’t fall apart when things were easy — they fell apart when the pressure mounted and unity mattered most. And that’s not just true in football — it’s true in life, and it’s true in the church. You can have all the right pieces in place, but without real unity, things eventually begin to break down.

Romans 14–15 can be summarized with a series of contrasts:
- strong vs. weak
- preferences vs. people
- self vs. others

As we come toward the end of Romans, it’s worth looking back at where we’ve been. Paul has spent chapter after chapter laying a deep theological foundation — sin and grace, law and grace, the overwhelming power of grace to save and transform.

And all of that matters because now Paul turns the corner into what you might call “toe-stepping territory.” He starts pressing into selflessness, servant-heartedness, and how we relate to one another in the church.

If you’re not careful, this is the point where a question starts to rise:
“But what about me?”
And Paul’s answer is this:
You have already been fully cared for by the grace of God.
You have already been welcomed, forgiven, and secured in Christ.
So now, that same grace becomes the lens through which you live — not grasping for yourself, but gladly giving yourself in humble submission for the good of others.

Under the rule of the Gospel, the law of love takes effect. Strong believers have an obligation to those who are weak — not to dismiss them, not to avoid them, but to bear with them and build them up.
That phrase “bear with” is important. It carries the idea of lifting and carrying weight that isn’t your own. This is not just patience — it is participation. It is stepping into someone else’s struggle and helping carry it.

In Romans 13:8, we were admonished to owe no one anything except the debt of love, and now we are told that we have this obligation to each other. The NIV uses the phrase “ought to bear.” The word being translated is ‘φείλομεν’, which refers to indebtedness or obligation. In fact, it is the exact same word that was used in Romans 13:8 for *owe*.

So what Paul is doing is connecting the dots:
The debt of love you owe? This is what it looks like.
It looks like carrying the burdens of others.

#### Not just avoiding harm — actively building up.

Part of this obligation is making sure we don’t harm a fellow believer. None of our actions should cause someone else to stumble.
But Paul doesn’t stop there.
It’s not just: Don’t tear them down.
It’s: Build them up.
This means we don’t just monitor our behavior — we actively pursue their good. We ask: What will strengthen them? What will help them grow? What will serve them best?
And don’t miss this — the strong are obligated to the weak.

Something that I want to point out and really draw your attention to in this passage is the fact that the strong are obligated to the weak. In the Christian walk, maturity is not necessarily evidenced by knowledge, experience, age, or ability. But strength does obligate one to others in a very significant way.

If you’re wondering what this actually looks like, we don’t have to guess — we’ve been given a perfect picture, Christ.
And here’s the tension:
The picture is beautiful…and it exposes how far we still have to grow.

#### Jesus absorbed reproach instead of asserting rights.

If anyone had the right to please Himself, it was Christ — God in the flesh.
And yet, He did not.

He submitted to the will of the Father (John 4:34) and worked to please the Father (John 5:30, 8:29). Indeed, as stated in Philippians 2:6-8:

> 6 Who, being in very nature God,
>     did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
> 7 rather, he made himself nothing
>     by taking the very nature of a servant,
>     being made in human likeness.
> 8 And being found in appearance as a man,
>     he humbled himself
>     by becoming obedient to death—
>         even death on a cross!

Indeed, this is the pattern called for in Scripture.

Paul then quotes Psalm 69:9 to show us this wasn’t random — this was the pattern all along.
Christ didn’t assert His rights — He absorbed our reproach.
That is the model.
Not self-protection.
Not self-advancement.
Self-giving love.

At this point, we might feel the tension:
That sounds costly.
And it is.
But Scripture teaches us something crucial — we can afford to live this way.
Over and over again, Scripture calls us to selfless living. But it also reminds us of God’s faithfulness, His promises, and His provision. That’s what produces endurance and encouragement — and ultimately, hope.
Let’s be honest — this runs against everything the world tells us.
The world says: Look out for yourself.
Help others if it’s convenient…or if it makes you feel good…but at the end of the day, take care of you.
And if we’re not careful, that mindset sneaks into the church.
We hear things like:
“You can’t pour out what you don’t have.”
“You need to be full before you give to others.”
Now — there’s a level where that’s true. We must be filled through our relationship with Christ. We need spiritual health.
But here’s the danger: we can take that truth and turn it into an excuse for self-focus.
Because when you look at Scripture, the dominant pattern is not self-preservation — it’s self-giving faith.
God uses people who step out, who trust Him, who put it on the line.
And over and over again, those who cling to self miss out, while those who give themselves away experience God’s faithfulness.
So no — don’t burn out.
But also don’t retreat into self-protection.
The call of Scripture is clear: trust God enough to live for others.

When Emily and I go hiking, we’re careful about how we pack — especially when it comes to water.
As a general rule, Emily carries the water she’ll need for the next hour. I carry the water we’ll need for the next six hours.
Why?
Because I can carry more weight, for longer, than she can.
And there’s no debate about it. I love her. We’re a team. So we just do what makes sense — we distribute the weight based on strength.
It really should be that simple in the church.

#### Specific Applications

1. Preferences vs. People (Church Life)
When you walk into church this week:
Are you thinking, “Did I like the music? Was this what I prefer?”
Or are you asking, “How can I encourage someone? Who can I build up?”
Unity grows when we prioritize people over preferences.

2. Freedom vs. Impact (Romans 14 context)
Before you make a decision, ask:
“I may be free to do this — but will this help or hurt someone else?”
This could be:
- Social choices
- Conversations
- What you post or say publicly
Not everything that is permissible is beneficial for others.

3. Convenience vs. Sacrifice (Time & Energy)
When your schedule is full:
Do you default to protecting your time?
Or are you willing to be interrupted for someone else’s need?
Examples:
- Staying late to talk with someone
- Making a call you don’t feel like making
- Showing up when it costs you something
Living for others will almost always cost you something.

But if that kind of life feels unnatural — it’s because it is. Which leads to the next movement…

If you’re sitting there thinking, “That’s a lot — I don’t know if I can live like that,” then you’re exactly where you need to be.
Because it is a lot.
And the good news is: You were never meant to do it on your own.

Paul begins, “May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you…”. In the Greek, there is a logical conjunction “δὲ” to start verse 5 that is missing in our translation; this little word signals that verse 5 comes in light of everything before.
Paul is not calling them to a life of selflessness and then leaving them to figure it out on their own.
No — he points them to the only source of that kind of life: God Himself.

The endurance and encouragement we see in Scripture come from God. The hope we’ve been talking about comes from God. And now Paul says that the unity required for this kind of life also comes from God.
You don’t manufacture this kind of humility.
You don’t willpower your way into this kind of selflessness.
God grants it.
It is through Him that we are shaped into the same mindset as Christ — a heart that is oriented away from self and toward others.

And when God produces that kind of selflessness in His people, something incredible happens:
It becomes unity.
And that unity becomes worship.
“One mind…one voice…glorifying God together.”
Unity is not sameness — it is shared direction.
Think about the church in Rome. It was made up of all kinds of people: Mature and immature; Wealthy and poor; Jew and Gentile.
And yet, when those differences are brought together under the Gospel — when people move toward one another instead of away from one another — it produces something powerful: a unified voice of worship that glorifies God.
Because only God can take people who shouldn’t naturally fit together…and make them one.

I grew up when the WWJD bracelets were everywhere.
And at its best, that question — What Would Jesus Do? — was meant to help people think through their decisions.
But here’s where we often shrink it down: We turn it into a question about avoiding sin.
And it is that — but it’s more than that.
The Christian life is not just about behavior modification.
It’s not just about what we don’t do.
It’s about who we are becoming.
Paul says in verse 7, “Welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you.”
That word “welcome” carries the idea of bringing someone in, receiving them, moving toward them.
And why do we do that?
Because that’s exactly what Christ has done for us.
Verse 8 reminds us that Jesus became a servant — not for His own sake, but for God’s truth — to fulfill the promises made to the fathers and to bring all nations into the blessing of God.
In other words: Jesus crossed the greatest divide to bring you in.
So now:
The standard is not comfort — it’s Christ.
The model is not preference — it’s Jesus.
WWJD is not just: What would Jesus avoid?
It’s: Where would Jesus move toward others in costly love?

I used to play trumpet in symphonic bands, and there’s something powerful about that setting.
No single instrument carries the entire piece.
Each one plays its part — different sounds, different roles.

Look, this doesn’t mean we just accept any behavior from any person. That is not unity through diversity; nobody gets to go off on their own and play it their way. But just because someone is a tuba doesn’t mean we don’t welcome them to the orchestra either.

When everyone follows the same conductor, when everyone plays in harmony, those differences don’t compete — they combine.
And what you get is something far greater than any one instrument could produce on its own.
That’s unity in diversity.
And that’s what the church is meant to be.

#### Practical Steps to Live This Out

1. Identify the Person
**Ask:**
Who is God putting in front of me right now?
**This could be:**
- Someone difficult
- Someone different from you
- Someone you’ve been avoiding
- Someone who simply has a need
You can’t move toward “everyone” — but you can move toward someone.

2. Ask the Better Question (WWJD Reframed)
**Not just:**
“Is this wrong?”
**But:**
“What would it look like to move toward them in love?”
**Ask:**
- What would serve them?
- What would build them up?
- What would reflect Christ here?

3. Take One Concrete Step
**Make it practical and specific:**
- Send the text
- Start the conversation
- Offer the help
- Give up the preference
- Show up when it costs you
Unity is not built on intentions — it’s built on action.

And when that kind of unity actually happens, something powerful is produced…

Verse 9 can be read a couple of different ways grammatically, but the end result is the same: Because of Christ’s work, the Gentiles are now glorifying God for His mercy.
And that is a massive statement.
Because Jews and Gentiles didn’t just disagree — they were divided.
They didn’t worship together.
They didn’t live life together.
They kept their distance.
But now, in the capital city of the Roman Empire, something unthinkable is happening: They are worshiping together.
So the question is — what could possibly bring two groups like that together?
Not shared culture.
Not shared preferences.
Not shared background.
God.

But more, what could be so important to bring these two groups together? Again, it is God. When very different groups of people find unity, something big is happening.

#### Gentiles glorifying God = visible evidence of Gospel power.

This is what the Gospel does.
It doesn’t just reconcile us to God — it reconciles us to each other.
And when that happens, it becomes visible.

#### Unity across deep differences is evidence that the Gospel is real.

Now, you might hear all of this and think, “That sounds revolutionary.”
But Paul says — it’s not new at all.
It’s been God’s plan from the very beginning.
And to prove it, Paul stacks up Scripture from across the Old Testament — drawing from the Law, the Writings, and the Prophets.

Psalm 18:49 voices an expectation of Jew and Gentile worshipping together:

> Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name.

Deuteronomy 32:43, known as the song of Moses, proclaimed:

> Rejoice, you nations, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants; he will take vengeance on his enemies and make atonement for his land and people.

In Psalm 117:1, the people of the earth are collected together, rather than as Jew and Gentile, simply as all nations. In praise to God, we are truly united.

> Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples.

In Isaiah 11:10, the prophet Isaiah predicted that through David's line, great unity would rally around Christ.

> In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.

Do you see the pattern?
#### God has always been forming one people from many.

#### Unity is not Plan B — it is *the* plan, and it centers not on everyone being the same but on everyone having the same purpose: Worship of the Holy God.

And notice — this unity is not built on everyone becoming the same.
It’s built on everyone having the same purpose: the worship of the one true God.

God fills us with:
- Joy
- Peace
- Hope
Not individually, but as a unified people.

Paul’s prayer is that the church in Rome is filled with hope, joy, and peace as they trust God. I want us to understand something: the more we worship and the more unity we have in worship, the more we will find hope, joy, and peace — and guess what that does? It increases our hope even more through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Take a second and just listen as I read Revelation 7:9-12:

> After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice:

Do you see it?
Different nations.
Different languages.
Different backgrounds.
But one voice.
One song.
One Savior.

#### Not because they are the same — but because they share the same Savior.

That is the future — and it is meant to shape how we live right now.
