Imagine walking through a cemetery.
Row after row of names. Dates. A dash in between.
Some of those people were incredibly successful.
Some were well-known.
Some had influence, wealth, maybe even a platform.
But standing there…you don’t know any of them.
And here’s the uncomfortable question:
One day, that will be true of us too.
No matter how much we achieve, build, or accomplish — most of it will fade from memory.
And yet…
We all have this deep desire to matter.
To be known.
To feel like our life actually counted.
So what does real significance look like?
Is it being remembered?
Is it influence?
Is it impact?
Romans 16 is surprising — because instead of giving us famous names…
it gives us a list of people most of us have never heard of.
And yet, God says: these are the significant ones.

Throughout Romans, we have seen Paul unfold the gospel in breathtaking detail. We have seen humanity’s rebellion and sin, the grace of justification by faith, freedom from condemnation in Christ, the struggle against sin, the work of the Spirit, God’s sovereign plan of redemption, and the call for believers to live transformed lives. Paul has shown us that the gospel changes everything — our standing before God, our relationship to suffering, our worship, our unity, our mission, and even the way we treat one another in the church. Romans has moved from deep theology to deeply practical living, showing that the gospel is not merely something we believe, but something that reshapes an entire community.
Now, when we arrive at Romans 16, you might be tempted to skip it because, at first glance, it feels like little more than a long list of unfamiliar names. But that would be unfortunate, because Romans 16 gives us a living picture of what the gospel actually produces. After fifteen chapters of doctrine, Paul ends with people. Real people. Men and women who served, sacrificed, struggled, hosted churches, risked their lives, carried burdens, and partnered together for the sake of Christ. Romans 16 reminds us that the gospel is never merely theoretical. The gospel creates a family. It draws ordinary people into God’s mission and gives eternal significance to lives that the world might otherwise overlook. In many ways, Romans 16 is not a random ending to the letter — it is the evidence that everything Paul has been teaching actually works.

What looks like a list of names is actually a portrait of a meaningful life in the gospel.

Phoebe, a deacon in the church at Cenchreae, was likely tasked with delivering Paul’s letter to the church in Rome. To really understand this passage, we need to pause for a moment and talk about the word deacon. The word is our transliteration of the Greek word διάκονος, which refers to someone who serves, ministers, or acts on behalf of another.

Early in the life of the church, a situation arose where the apostles could not manage all the practical ministry needs while also remaining devoted to prayer and the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:1–7). So the church appointed an official group of servants — deacons — to care for the needs of the congregation so that the pastors could remain focused on teaching, prayer, and spiritual oversight.
That distinction matters because the Biblical offices are significant. Pastors are tasked primarily with the ministry of the Word and prayer. Titus 1:9 adds the responsibility of guarding sound doctrine and opposing false teaching, while Ephesians 4:11–12 explains that pastors equip believers for ministry. Since Scripture uses the terms pastor, elder, and overseer interchangeably, pastors do bear leadership responsibility within the church, but many of the practical and mercy-oriented ministries of the church fall to the deacons.

Now, a question naturally arises: Is Phoebe being called a deacon in the formal sense of the office, or is Paul simply describing her as a servant? There is more to that discussion than we need to get into this morning, but the Greek strongly suggests that Phoebe likely held the recognized office of deacon in the church at Cenchreae. Today is not the day to talk about the qualifications of deacons, but I will point out that in the early church we have at least one example of a woman who held that office.

Regardless of where one lands on every detail of that discussion, the larger point is unmistakable: the office of deacon (Acts 6:1–7; 1 Timothy 3:8–13) is profoundly significant — not because deacons stand in front of everyone, but because they serve down in the trenches among everyone.

Importance in God’s kingdom is not measured by stage time, public recognition, income, or authority. Importance is measured through humble, faithful service.

In the world, significance comes from becoming indispensable. In the kingdom of God, significance often comes from quietly helping others flourish. Importance is not about being impressive; it is about being dependable. It is about becoming someone others can count on.

In verse 2, Paul asks the Roman believers to “receive” Phoebe in a manner worthy of the saints. In other words, “Treat her like family. Care for her. Support her.” Why? Not because she had an impressive résumé, not because she held degrees, not because she had status — but because she had faithfully helped God’s people.

Notice how simple Paul’s commendation is: Phoebe had been useful in the work of the Kingdom.
That is how the gospel reshapes our understanding of significance. The gospel is not about climbing ladders, accumulating titles, or building personal platforms. Christ gave His life for us when we had nothing to offer Him. Therefore, Christians serve not to become important, but because we already belong to Christ.

And I love how Paul concludes his instructions about deacons in 1 Timothy 3:13: “Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.”

Think about that. What is the reward for faithful service? Greater confidence in Christ.

Something happens when people truly serve faithfully. Their faith deepens. Their trust in God grows stronger. If you want your faith to grow, then take steps of faith. Commit yourself to faithful service.

=== And others still play a significant role in the church. ===
We have spent a great deal of time talking about Phoebe, and rightly so, but in verses 21–24 Paul mentions several others as well.

Timothy is there, traditionally understood to be the pastor at Ephesus, but Paul does not introduce him as “Pastor Timothy.” He simply calls him a “co-worker.” Tertius, Paul’s amanuensis — the man who physically wrote down the letter as Paul dictated it — is mentioned. Gaius is mentioned. Erastus is mentioned. The list goes on.

But the emphasis is not on titles or positions. The emphasis is on people who faithfully served.

I want us to really understand this: significance is not found in titles or status. You do not need a title to serve, and sometimes titles can even get in the way of service. The church does not advance because everyone has recognition; it advances because ordinary believers quietly and faithfully participate in the work of God.

Significance is not about position, but participation in God’s work.

One of my heroes passed away a couple of years ago. His name was Earl.

Technically, Earl was a retired teacher, a deacon, and a Sunday School teacher, but none of those titles are what made him memorable. What made Earl memorable was that he simply wanted to serve.

When my brothers and I were kids, we spent a lot of time at the church visiting my dad, and it felt like Earl was there every single day. He was fixing sprinkler heads, trimming trees, mowing the lawn, repairing outlets — always doing something. Earl spent his retirement serving the church.

As a child, I just thought of him as a kind of extra grandpa. But as I got older, I started realizing things I had missed.

Earl was incredibly intelligent. He even had a seminary degree. He probably could have become a pastor, but that was not what God had called him to do, so instead he faithfully taught Sunday School for years. And I do not think most people even knew he had the degree because he never talked about it.
Earl was also a deacon, but I never once heard him announce that fact. The only way people knew was by watching him serve communion.

And there was something else I learned later: Earl was extremely wealthy. He had invested wisely when he was younger, and there were probably times when Earl personally covered more than twenty-five percent of the church budget. But again, hardly anyone knew.

Because Earl was not trying to build significance for himself. He simply served.

Titles did not matter to him. Recognition did not matter to him. Prestige did not matter to him. He just faithfully invested his time, abilities, and resources into the work of God.

#### Practical Ways to Serve Faithfully Where God Has Placed You
* Show up consistently even when nobody notices.
* Volunteer for a task that normally gets overlooked.
* Use your skills to help someone in the church this week.
* Encourage a weary believer with a phone call or note.
* Serve without needing recognition or credit.
* Give your time, not just your opinion.
* Look for needs instead of waiting to be asked.
* Pray faithfully for your church leaders and ministries.
* Commit to serving in one specific area long-term.
* Ask God each morning, “Who can I help today?”

As you read through this list of names, one thing becomes very clear: Christianity was never meant to be lived alone. The gospel creates deep and meaningful relationships.

Some people in this list risked their lives for one another (v. 4). Others opened their homes to the church (v. 5). Others labored faithfully side by side in ministry. The repeated theme throughout these verses is relationship.

As I was studying this passage, I came across an interesting historical detail. During the reign of Augustus, letter-writing customs began including greetings to specific individuals by name. In many of Paul’s other letters he simply says things like “greet one another” or “greet all the saints,” but here in Romans Paul follows that cultural pattern and specifically names around two dozen people.

But Paul is doing more than following cultural convention. He is intentionally emphasizing the people themselves. He names individuals across social boundaries, ethnic boundaries, and gender boundaries to show the unity the gospel creates within the church.

Priscilla and Aquila are mentioned first and receive the greatest attention. Interestingly, Priscilla’s name is listed before Aquila’s, which was unusual in that culture because Aquila was the husband. Once again we see the gospel flattening social expectations.

Paul says this couple “risked their own necks” for him (literally, the Greek uses the word “neck”). Not only Paul, but all the churches of the Gentiles were thankful for them. This husband-and-wife team appears six times throughout the New Testament. They first met Paul in Corinth and repeatedly became faithful partners in ministry, helping him, supporting him, and even putting themselves in danger for the sake of the gospel.

And then we learn something else: the church met in their house.

That detail matters. In the ancient world, many churches met in homes, particularly the homes of believers with enough space to host gatherings. Priscilla and Aquila used what they had for the good of God’s people.

This is what the gospel does. It transforms relationships from casual acquaintances into sacrificial partnerships centered on Christ.

=== Ordinary faithfulness becomes eternally significant. ===
Most of the names in this passage are unknown to us. In fact, entire pages of commentaries are devoted to speculation about who some of these people may have been. Historians try to connect names to government officials, wealthy families, or references in other ancient writings. For example, there is an Aristobulus mentioned by Josephus who may possibly connect to this passage.

But at the end of the day, much of it is speculation.

Here is what we actually know: these were ordinary believers who faithfully followed Jesus.

Paul calls them dear friends, co-workers, beloved brothers and sisters, faithful laborers, and people who endured hardship for Christ. Some were Jews, others Gentiles. Some had Greek names, others Latin names. Some were men, others women. One woman is even described almost like a mother to Paul himself.

And here is what strikes me: most of these people are completely unknown to history, but they were not unknown to God.

In the church, ordinary faithfulness becomes eternally significant.

The world says significance belongs to celebrities, rulers, and influencers. The gospel says significance belongs to ordinary believers who faithfully love Christ and invest in His people.

You may never have your name remembered in history books, but when you encourage another believer, teach a child, pray faithfully, open your home, or quietly serve the church, those acts echo into eternity.

About fifteen years ago, Emily and I were walking around Washington, D.C. and decided to visit the National Archives — not the main entrance where everyone goes to see the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. We went into the lesser-known archive areas downstairs where they stored all sorts of historical documents.

While we were there, we searched for the name Wakefield and eventually found the Ellis Island ship manifest that recorded my grandpa entering the United States. It was pretty incredible to see his name written there.

But that document was really only meaningful to me and my family. Most people would walk right past it without caring at all.

And that is true for most people throughout history.

Sometimes all that remains is a name on a document, a newspaper clipping, or a tombstone. Some people have their names preserved in history books. A very small number even have their names recorded in Scripture.

But here is the reality: eternal significance is not found in whether people remember your name. Eternal significance comes through Jesus Christ and faithful participation in His work.

Your faithfulness matters even if nobody writes it down.

One of the beautiful things about Romans 16 is that it reminds us the church is supposed to be a place where people are truly known and valued.

Paul knew these people. He loved these people. He appreciated these people.

Take a moment and think back on the people in the church who shaped your life. Maybe it was a Sunday School teacher, someone who prayed for you, someone who encouraged you during a difficult season, someone who quietly showed kindness year after year.

Most of those people will never become famous.

But they mattered.

The church is one of the few places left in the world where people are meant to be loved not because of status, success, or usefulness, but simply because they belong to Christ.

And that kind of relationship is deeply significant.

== **Insignificance in Divisiveness ** — Rejecting Gospel unity leads to empty, fleeting significance (16:16–20). ==

There is a sharp contrast between verses 16 and 17.
Verse 16 calls believers to greet one another warmly as family. Verse 17 warns believers to watch out for those who create division.

That contrast matters.

Paul has spent this entire chapter highlighting people from different backgrounds who have been united together by Christ. Jews and Gentiles. Men and women. Wealthy believers and ordinary laborers. Slave names and noble names appear side by side in this list.

Then Paul says, “Greet one another with a holy kiss.”

That greeting deserves our attention because in the ancient world a kiss was normally reserved for family members, close friends, social equals, or as a gesture of respect toward someone of higher status. For someone of high standing to greet someone beneath them in this way would have been highly unusual.

But the gospel changes relationships.

Paul insists on this kind of greeting because the church is now a new family — the family of God. Social barriers are flattened in Christ. People who normally would never associate with one another are now brothers and sisters.

And it is precisely because that unity is so precious that Paul immediately warns the church about divisive people.

Verse 17 calls believers to “watch out” for those who create divisions and place stumbling blocks before others. Notice Paul is not specifically talking about false teachers here, though false teaching is certainly dangerous. His focus is broader. He is talking about divisive people — people who fracture unity, stir conflict, create factions, and damage the fellowship of the church.

And I think we often minimize this problem.

Sometimes divisive people are dismissed as, “Well, that’s just how they are.” But Scripture treats divisiveness seriously. Paul says to avoid such people because someone does not have to deny doctrine in order to damage the witness of the gospel.

A constantly divisive spirit works against the very unity Christ died to create.

=== The call is not tolerance, but discernment. ===
Paul continues in verse 18 by saying divisive people “do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites.” That is strong language.

And what is especially dangerous is that divisive people are not always obvious. Paul says they use “smooth talk and flattery.” In other words, they can sound persuasive, caring, even spiritual.

That means Christians must practice discernment.

Not every critical spirit is wisdom. Not every negative voice is courage. Not every person who stirs concern is protecting the church.

Sometimes people simply enjoy conflict. Sometimes they enjoy influence. Sometimes they enjoy positioning themselves as gatekeepers or perpetual critics.

And Paul says clearly: steer clear of people who consistently sow division.

That does not mean we avoid hard conversations or refuse accountability. The church must address sin, protect truth, and make difficult decisions. But there is a profound difference between lovingly pursuing truth and constantly creating strife.

Many people want influence. They want to be the person whose opinion carries weight, the one who controls decisions, or the one everyone listens to.

But Paul redirects our attention away from influence and toward obedience.

In verse 19, Paul commends the Romans because their obedience is widely known. Then he encourages them to be “wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.”

That is the focus.
Not building a personal following.
Not controlling outcomes.
Not winning arguments.
Simply obeying Christ.

And Paul reminds them that God is already at work: “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.”

That statement reframes everything. Christians do not need to grasp for control because Christ has already secured the victory. Satan’s defeat is certain. God will accomplish His purposes in His timing.
Our role is faithful obedience.

This action step should make all of us pause for a moment.

Most of us probably do not think of ourselves as false teachers. But the harder question is this: Are we sometimes divisive?

Do we stir discouragement more than encouragement?
Do we create suspicion instead of trust?
Do we constantly point out problems without helping pursue solutions?
Do we enjoy criticism more than unity?

Scripture takes divisiveness seriously because unity in the church is precious.

So honestly ask yourself:
“Am I helping strengthen the unity of Christ’s church, or am I quietly undermining it?”

== **Lasting Significance** — True significance is found in the glory of God, not the recognition of people (16:25–27). ==
As Paul closes Romans, he ends not by glorifying people, but by glorifying God.

After all the names, all the relationships, all the service, and all the warnings, Paul lifts the church’s eyes upward in a concluding doxology.

And what stands out immediately is that our faithfulness ultimately rests not on human strength, but on the power of God Himself.

Paul says God is able to establish His people according to the gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ. The good news Paul preached was not a human invention. It was the long-awaited revelation of God’s eternal plan — a mystery hinted at throughout the Scriptures for generations but now fully revealed in Jesus Christ.

For centuries the prophets pointed forward to the coming Messiah. Now, in Christ, the plan of God has been made known.

And this revelation is not limited to one nation or one people. The gospel has now been revealed to all nations so that both Jew and Gentile might come to God through “the obedience of faith.”

That phrase is important.

True obedience does not earn salvation. Rather, genuine faith produces obedience. The gospel transforms lives, bringing people into submission to Christ not through external law-keeping, but through hearts changed by grace.

And because of all of this, Paul ends exactly where Romans has been heading all along: “to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ.”

That is where true significance is found.
Not in recognition.
Not in fame.
Not in influence.
Not even in having our names remembered.
True significance is found in belonging to the God whose glory lasts forever.

Practice seeing significance the way God does.
Not through status.
Not through visibility.
Not through power.
But through faithful people who love Christ, serve others, and walk together in the gospel.
