 **In Luke 2:1-7, we see Mary reaching completion of her term.  I imagine it was pretty obvious to everyone around that Mary was about to give birth.  The need for birth was very real.  Can you imagine traveling 70 miles through rugged terrain at term?  I have heard women say something to the effect "one way or another this baby had better come!"  I can't imagine Mary felt any different.
 **Luke 2:8-20, speaks to the excitement of Christ's birth.  Here we see angels proclaiming to shepherds the exciting news that in the city of David a Savior has been born and this Savior is none other than Christ, the Lord.

 *Verse 38, Romans typically left a crucified body on the cross to rot, decay, and be consumed by scavenging animals.  The Jews, however, removed the exposed bodies attempting to maintain the purity commanded in <mark>Deuternomy 21:22-23</mark>, “If a man has committed a sin deserving of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain overnight on the tree, but you shall surely bury him that day, so that you do not defile the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance; for he who is hanged is accursed of God."  The Jews sought to keep the land from defilement because frankly, dead bodies are disgusting, spread disease, and are, generally, unpleasant.

 *In verse 40 we see two men, secret disciples, members of the Sanhedrin, following Jewish custom for preparing a body.  The Jews are not embalming the body but rather trying to reduce the disgust of a decaying body.  However, no matter how hard they try, they will not and cannot stop the inevitable decay of death.  Perfumes and ointments can only mask the underlying problem.
 ===The finality of death (V. 41-42)===

 *Verse 42, The nearby tomb provided an easy to access location where these men could bestow this final honor on their teacher.  These men do all they can for the body of Christ, but their efforts can only do so much.  Jesus is dead and nothing they can do can change that simple fact.
