A Church in disorder
A case of incest
- What issue does Paul raise in 1 Corinthians 5:1?
- How had the church apparently responded? (V2)
- How should church respond to sin? (V3-5)
- What does in the name of the Lord Jesus and with the power of our old Jesus mean in this passage?
- At least seven possible explanations:
- Assembled in name and had over with power
- Assembled in the name and with power
- Both could go with hand over
- Both could go with both
- In the name -> hand over, with power->when you are assembled
- In the name -> passed judgement, with the power -> you are assembled
- in the name -> passed judgment, with the power -> hand over
- There is not a clear answer, but what is clear is that Christ is part of the local church.
- At least seven possible explanations:
- What reason for expulsion is given in verse 5?
- What does the destruction of the flesh mean?
- What further reason is given in verses 6-8?
- From the context what does it seem like the Corinthians were boasting in?
- At the time that Paul wrote this passage a component of passover would have been a solemn search for any yeast to clean it out of the house before the pascha was killed. Since our pasta (Christ) has already been killed the yeast should already be out, we should not be bringing it back in.
- What clarification does Paul provide in verses 9-13?
- How does all of this relate to the idea of loving people? (Proverbs 13:24)
Conclusion
- How does this apply to the church today?
