Confidence

In verses 6-7 we see that even in the light of great uncertainty Paul called on Timothy to place his confidence in God. It is God who is accomplishing his plan in us.

Courage

The Text

ESV

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.

An Honorable Proposal (Verse 8)

  • See 1 Peter 4

Paul calls on Timothy to stay with Christ, even if it involves suffering and discomfort. First Peter 3:14 says that we are blessed in trials.

Suffering is normal/expected for the follower of Christ

In Chapter 4 of First Peter we see that we should not think it strange to endure suffering.

We must be ready to suffer. We must be prepared to suffer persecution for Christ.

Suffering Allows Participation (verse 13)

Suffering Brings Glory (verses 14-16)

The Reality of God’s Provision (verse 9a)

The Source of God’s Priovision (verse 9b)

The Establishment of God’s Provision (verse 9c)

The Revelation of God’s Provision (verse 10a)
